A Very Special Thank You Message

Back in March 2018 the Kegworth Heritage Centre had an uncertain future. Many community projects both in the village and across the country in general were suffering from the double threat of a lack of funding and a lack of people who cared enough to keep these projects viable.

Since April 2018, the new group of trustees have worked hard to gather enough funds to get the overdue refurbishment of the Heritage Centre underway, and although it has been a struggle, the work has progressed (albeit at a snail’s pace) funded from our own account, together with partial funding from both Kegworth Parish Council and the Co-Op Community Fund (for which Kegworth's own residents can be thanked). This has meant the museum has had to remain closed for much of the year. What started as a relatively simple floor replacement revealed far more underlying problems, and the vicious cycle of having almost no income because of the closure and the need to find additional money for the extra remedial building work has been frustrating and demoralising.

However, the effort to find additional funds has finally paid off and we were astonished and delighted to receive the news that The Michael Bishop Foundation were going to provide us with a significant donation to help with the repairs and development of the buildings.

The Foundation was set up by Sir Michael Bishop in 1989. Sir Michael, Baron Glendonbrook, will be a familiar name to many people in the area as the driving force behind British Midland Airways for many years.

Their donation will not only enable the existing refurbishment to be completed earlier than we had dared hope, but also means that we can start work on other necessary improvements including replacement windows and heating. In addition, we can now begin to realise some of the other exciting changes we have been talking about, moving them from pipe dreams to reality.

This injection of funds is incredibly important to the sustainability of the Heritage Centre and we express our deep thanks to the Michael Bishop Foundation for allowing us to take a big step forward towards an exciting future as a continued, valuable asset to Kegworth.
