2018 and Beyond

To say that 2018 has been a challenging year for the Kegworth Heritage Centre is something of an understatement. In March the centre was at crisis point and on the verge of shutting down completely. Before the AGM on the 13th March, the centre was teetering on the brink with the committee reduced to two members, but there was a glimmer of light following on from that and the ensuing EGM on March 23rd when a number of people volunteered their services and the new trustee board was elected or co-opted.

The ten new trustees met for the first time on April 5th, and despite losing one person, have continued to build on that initial wave of enthusiasm. Some of the results are in plain sight. We have a new website, a Facebook page and a sister site on Facebook - the highly popular Kegworth Remembered page with over 750 members.

Although the Heritage Centre is not currently open (more on that in a moment) we have been able to host a few special events. In June, we opened to coincide with the One Kegworth Family Day and welcomed over forty people. In September we took part in the Hello Heritage event, attracting over sixty visitors over two days. We also had a presence at the Sutton Bonington show and the Annual Ghost Walk was supported by twenty people on the night, but was preceded by a special and equally well-supported Ghost Walk for the Kegworth Wives Group.

The Centre has had to suspend its normal opening schedule because of some major refurbishment. We need a new downstairs floor and new windows throughout the building as well as an improved heating system. The trustees are continuing to try to find financial resources to fund these expensive projects and the building work for the floor is still expected to take place this year. In preparation for this, there has been a lot of de-cluttering and archiving of materials, and the focus of the centre is being directed towards truly Kegworth related content.

We also have plans to improve the Heritage Centre shop and are looking at the possibilities of on-line electronic sales. The old membership scheme is being revisited to better align with the new vision for the centre, and the Friends of Kegworth Heritage Centre should be launched in the New Year.

All of these activities take time, effort and money, and despite what we have achieved, there is still a long way to go. We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us over the year, especially our volunteer helpers, and hope you will continue to offer that support as we execute our plans for the future.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
