Now the site of Kegworth Library, in the 19th Century this was a development of workers’ houses. In the yard there was a well for use on washdays, while two standing taps were also available with a wash-house situated in the right-hand corner of the yard. At the far end of the yard stood a building comprising of a coalhouse, 3 & 4 seaters (toilets) and an ashes midden.

Eventually a cold tap and toilet was put into each house.

Some remnants of the old wall can be seen around the boundaries of the library today.

It is not known why the area was called “Australia Yard” but we do know that a Kegworth family was left some land in Australia in the 1880s. There is a Kegworth St and Kegworth Public School in New South Wales, Australia.
