The Cap & Stocking is located on what was originally known as Cap & Stocking Lane, now Borough Street. The pub name reflects the region’s historical ties to the hosiery industry which was a significant part of the local economy during the time of its founding in the 1800s.

The present property was built on the site of the original in the early 1900s and whilst it was being rebuilt, landlord William Pegg Woolley set up a temporary hut in the garden to use as a bar. Since the rebuild the pub has undergone several refurbishments and changes but retained much of its original charm with features such as exposed wooden beams, a cozy fireplace and traditional layout. Locals visiting the pub in the present century will recall the “Bird and Fish Room” with its stuffed specimens. Some of the fish were caught by Mr Woolley, who was landlord from 1897 until 1921.

Until 2022, “Flat Bass” was served from a jug rather than a pump.

Reopened in October 2024, and "Flat Bass" is back by popular demand!
