There have been two pubs in Kegworth with the name Horse & Groom. The first one was on the High Street and renamed the Red Lion sometime in the mid 1800s. The second one was on the Market Place and started life as King William IV, then the Crown, and eventually The Horse and Groom.

It is rumoured that Owen Widdowson, one of the landlords in the 1950s, had a Myna bird renowned for its bad language. Whenever a lady customer entered, its cage would either be covered up to stop it saying the wrong thing, or it was moved to the living quarters.

In the 1970s, the pub was closed and the building is currently used as a shop, Soar Trading, and taxi firm AJ Cars.
