Kegworth Heritage Plaques - Kegworth House
High Street
Kegworth House was built c1732 and was originally a farmhouse. At various times during the 1800s and 1900s it was used by Doctors in the village. Dr. T.E. Rawson, in partnership with Dr. W. Helmsley used the premises until the mid 1800s. Dr G W Smith practised there from 1876 until the late 1890s. Dr. J Jeffares moved into the property in 1921 and held a practice there until 1939 when he retired. He was then succeeded by Dr M. A Gerrard.
In 1948, the National Health Service was introduced which meant that everyone was entitled to free medical care at the point of delivery. Dr. Gerrard suddenly found that he had too many patients to treat on his own and so he employed an assistant, Dr. Mary Wood. Dr Wood lived at Kegworth House with the Gerrards for four years until she was able to build a house of her own. When Dr. Gerrard retired in 1958, she set up her own surgery at the top of Mill Lane.
Dr Gerrard’s surgery was situated at the rear of Kegworth House, and patients would get to the back of the property through an archway at the front. This archway has now been blocked up but can be clearly seen today with a window at the top.
The property was used as a hotel for a short period of time but is now a private residence.
