Kegworth Heritage Plaques - The Old Co-op
15, Dragwell & 1, Old Forge Close

The buildings at No 15 Dragwell and No 1 Old Forge Close combine to mark the site of the Co-op from 1903 until 1969. There is a stone tablet set into the brickwork towards the top of the first floor that marks the 1903 build date.

After it closed here in 1969 it transferred to the current store in the Market Place. This building was then used as a Community Centre paid for by Leicestershire Education Authority until 2015 when it closed and was converted to private housing.

There is a story about a particular character who ran this store before and during the first World War. Mr Green became known as "Split Raisin" because of his parsimonious attitude when weighing out dried fruit and other commodities. If the weight was a small amount over, he would literally split a raisin to get it exactly right.
